Developing a treatment plan begins with the OT initial evaluation. The initial evaluation is the first meeting of the child and the therapist. During the evaluation, the therapist assesses the child’s strengths, challenges, daily routines, and what matters to the child and to the family, then goals are set collaboratively.
A treatment plan is individualized, based on each child’s abilities and needs. Our therapists also adjust the plan over time, monitoring progress and making changes to the treatment plan, if necessary, as the child grows.
What to Expect During Therapy Sessions
Occupational therapy sessions for children with autism can be structured or unstructured, depending on the child’s needs and goals. Our OTs provide fun and engaging activities that also target skills that they need for their everyday activities.
The OT might start with a movement or sensory activity to help the child feel more regulated before moving on to tabletop/sitting activities or specific tasks like handwriting, tying shoelaces, and social games. The goal is to engage your child as much as possible and create an environment that suits the needs of each kiddo we work with.
A typical session lasts from 30-60 minutes.
